War On The Landscape

War On The Landscape
The physical remnants of war are still visible in the landscape sixty years on from the end of World War Two. These physical reminders, sometimes hidden, of a war torn Britain contrast starkly with the beauty and peace of the Dorset landscape today. From tangled metal to concrete shapes and forms the erosion of these objects reflects nature’s ability to reclaim the
landscape.
An interesting dichotomy arises when the perception of these objects changes with the passing of time; from necessary utilitarian features of conflict to historical landmarks whose survival with in the landscape has warranted their preservation.
These photographs attempt to record a landscape that continues to evolve and change and absorb man’s impact upon it. |

Centenarians

Centenarians
Year by year, centenarians are a growing minority of the population of the UK. In 1997 it was estimated that there were 8,000 centenarians in the UK, and by the year 2030 some estimates put the projected figure at a staggering 30,000!
As a new century begins it seemed appropriate to take a reflective look at where we have been. And where better for getting real perspective than from those people who had seen most of the last century out, some of them having lived in three separate centuries.
Centenarians is an attempt to portray the spirit of these remarkable people. |

This ongoing project aims to portray many of Britain’s Individual Olympic Gold Medallists. This rich collection of sporting personalities and their stimulating accounts of hardship and endeavour provide a striking backdrop to today’s high profile competitive world of Olympic competition. With Britain’s successful bid to host the 2012 Olympics the project has taken on a further significance.
As the work has developed it has realised an historical value as these iconic chapters of British sporting achievement are inevitably slipping away. |

working out

Working Out
Manual Work in Britain at the turn of the century 'Working out' chronicles manual labour in Britain at the turn of the century. It celebrates the 'worker' and offers a candid view of what is being left behind in our headlong rush towards a technological future.
It documents industries that were once the backbone of the nation's wealth and captures traditional ways of working that are rapidly becoming eroded. For instance, just a couple of months after Brent's visit to South Crofty tin mine in Cornwall, the decision was taken to close it - bringing to an end centuries of tin mining in Europe.
As with much of Brent's work the relationship between man and his landscape is central to the collection. |
